Yesterday, the cleanup hitter of my favorite team hit his 100th career home run since turning pro.
He's a popular player who attracts attention—both good and bad—and often faces harsh criticism. But personally, I really like him.
At the beginning of the season, I was worried because he was striking out a lot, but he’s been on fire ever since. It feels like he’s had a breakthrough, and every time he steps up to the plate, the anticipation is higher than ever. His 100th home run was a perfect hit—one of those where you could tell the moment the bat connected. I ended up cheering loudly in front of the TV all by myself. (Looking back, a 40-year-old man making such a fuss might have been a bit embarrassing.)
At my usual station’s convenience store, I happened to spot a sports newspaper. His article was featured prominently on the front page. Since it was a special occasion, I bought a sports newspaper for the first time.
Maybe next year or the year after, he’ll head to the Major Leagues. But for now, I’ll keep this paper as a treasured memory.
